The young people from Saint Petersburg, who are going to take part in the Tall Ships’ races had to face wind and waves during their practice in the Gulf of Finland. They had to spent at least 24 hours in the open waters. Training trips to Vyborg, Primorsk and the forts of Kronstadt also took place.
The yacht crews of ‘Adventure’, ‘Argo’, ‘Diana’, ‘Elena’, ‘Nika’ and ‘Younga’ had to face a special challenge. The crews of these yachts partially consisted of young sailors and they took part in the ‘100 miles Cup’, competing against professional yachtsmen. From 12 till 14 of June they took up challenges in tactics and speed, while sailing from Kronstadt to Narva and back to Kronstadt. Among the winners of the race were two training yachts - ‘Adventure’ won the first prize in its class, and the yacht ‘Elena’ took the second.
Young sailers had to face very strong wind at the end of the first day of competition; this was a true challenge not only for the young people, but for the captains too. Short sailing trips are useful to check the compatibility of the crew and the readiness of the youth to face challenges. After analyzing the results of the training trips, yacht captains take a decision whether to accept certain sailors into the crew or not; and then prepare the final roles for each person on the ship.
